This month, we’re shining our Nurse Spotlight on Kevin Adams, BSN, RN, a lifelong Buckeye who partners with patients in our ICU. What I do at The James My job mostly consists of passing medications, collaborating with physicians and taking care of patients — hearing their concerns, hearing what they need and really being there for them. I have a great team and allocate different tasks, so when I can’t be in the room, we make sure that we meet our goal of great patient care. Building leadership through teamwork I started in the ICU as a new nurse, and everyone in my unit has been a part of my learning and development. Now, as I’m developing into more of a leader, it’s amazing to be able to be there for my team and help everyone else through their transitions, whether they’re a new nurse or just new to The James. We’re very focused on making sure everyone is providing the best care we possibly can. An “incredible” opportunity Working at the James is incredible. There have been wonderful staffing ratios, incredible technology — pretty much everything I could have asked for in my profession. We have a whole interdisciplinary team — pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, case managers and social workers. We’re all together, and we talk about patients’ plans of care — everyone contributes something. The benefits of a Comprehensive Cancer Center Working at a Comprehensive Cancer Center is really interesting because you get to be a part of important research. I get to administer new therapies and give clinical trial treatments. It’s really cool to see how these new treatments work and wonderful to see patients do so well. O-H… I was born and raised in Columbus. I loved this city, as I grew up in Clintonville — it was the most amazing community. I always felt like I was part of something, and that transferred over to Ohio State. The second I toured the campus, I thought, ‘I have to go here.’ Then, working in the hospital as a student made me want to stay. This is home. The best part of the job I’m a hard worker and I like to process emotion, so I thought nursing was a perfect summation of all the things I was looking for. I feel so lucky to provide care to the patients at The James. I get to help them through their hardest times and I get to celebrate their successes — really just be there for them. I think there’s something really beautiful about that.
