The FDA recently approved a new treatment that genetically alters patients’ own immune cells to attack childhood leukemia. James expert Dr. Samantha Jaglowski is now studying the possible use of the same treatment – called CAR-T therapy – for adults with leukemia. The experts remove a patient’s own white blood cells and “re-educates” them to recognize certain genetic markers on the surface of cancer cells, then send them back in to attack those cells.
