Through screening promotion and prevention education, OSUCCC – James experts are working to reduce cases of cervical cancer in Appalachia. The effort, led by Dr. Electra Paskett, is aimed at women in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, and features partnerships with approximately 35 health centers across 10 health systems. “The goal of this study is to address the three major causes of cervical cancer: tobacco smoking, lack of PAP smear screening and HPV vaccination,” Paskett says. “The idea is that we can teach health centers how to talk to their patients about this, and we can bundle recommendations at the family level and, thus, be able to prevent cervical cancer.”
