Ohio State research could lead the way to quality-of-life improvements for older lung cancer patients. OSUCCC – James researchers are leading a study called Resiliency among Older Adults Receiving Lung Cancer Treatment (ROAR-LCT) designed to focus on all aspects of health during treatment. “ROAR is a combined intervention—patients who are signed up see the physical therapist and the psychologist in person as part of their regular clinic visits,” Carolyn Presley, MD, says. “It's focused on implementing a novel supportive care intervention.” Click to learn more about lung cancer care at Ohio State. Lung cancer — the leading cause of cancer-related deaths — presents many treatment challenges, which can take an emotional toll on patients and their caregivers. That’s why ROAR researchers work with the loved ones of patients as well, providing comprehensive, expansive treatment therapies. “The care plan is more than just the cancer treatment,” Presley says. “It's how do patients feel, and how are the care partners feeling?” The OSUCCC – James is a leader in lung cancer treatment, offering innovative surgical options, including the latest in robotic procedures. As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, doctors and researchers can provide patients with access to groundbreaking clinical trials involving immunotherapies, targeted treatments and novel supportive care, like the ROAR study. “We’re combining interventions to really address both the body and the mind together,” Presley says. “We want to provide experiences that will make patients want to say, ‘I got my treatment at The James, and they care about me as a person.’” Click to learn more about clinical trials at the OSUCCC – James.
