As we mark another World Cancer Day, doctors, researchers and others around the world are working in labs, at bedsides and in communities to improve treatment, prevention and screening — and to ensure that those advances are available to all. “Throughout countless generations, people across the world have shared a collective cancer journey,” says David Cohn, MD, MBA, the interim CEO of The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University. “Whether we’ve had cancer ourselves or experienced it through a loved one — in many cases, both — all have been touched by one or more of these conditions and their wide-ranging impacts on all areas of life. “World Cancer Day provides the opportunity to reflect on the amazing treatment advances we’ve achieved through research and care, while celebrating survivors and honoring those we’ve lost. “At the OSUCCC – James, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the development and testing of innovative treatments that can save and improve lives now and long into the future. We will also continue to strive to increase access to vital care, screening and education to ensure that each member of every community can benefit from state-of-the-art cancer therapies, early detection and prevention practices.” Breaking new ground in cancer research “When I ran, I said I wanted to be a president who would preside over the end of cancer as we know it, and when I see the strides we’ve made …I can tell you, it’s within our reach. I know we can do this. This place is a source of hope.” — President Joe Biden during a 2021 visit to the OSUCCC – James Learn about cancer research innovation at The James: Immunotherapy Cancer clinical trials Genetic counseling Digital pathology Precision cancer medicine Reducing disparities in cancer care access “Health equity is really the opportunity for everyone to attain their full health potential without impact from any socially-defined circumstances.” — Cheryl Lee, MD, chief health equity officer at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
