Dedicated specialists and clinical trials provide Ohio State patients with world class care for head and neck cancers. Head and neck cancers are a rare group of diseases that start in patients’ mouth, throat, nose and voicebox areas. “These cancers are usually treated with a combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy,” says Priyanka Bhateja, MD, a member of the OSUCCC – James’ dedicated head and neck cancer team, among the most experienced groups in the nation. Ohio State’s head and neck cancer patients have access to world-class medical and radiation oncology and reconstructive surgery services, along with speech-and-swallow specialists that work to improve quality of life before, during and after treatment. Patients also have access to multiple clinical trials focused on head and neck cancers, including studies that offer innovative therapeutic and supportive treatments. “Clinical trials provide opportunities for patients to get new, innovative drugs that could be widely approved several years from now,” Bhateja says. “The drugs are administered in a controlled and monitored setting. Several researchers, doctors, pharmacists, regulatory staff and safety committees have come together for us to be able to present trials to patients in our clinics.
