“Simply said: We’ve had an amazing year.” In his annual State of the Cancer Program Address, Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, summed up the accomplishments of 2015 with this short phrase. More specifically, he pointed to 40 faculty recruited to do cancer research in colleges across The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children's Hospital, and to a nearly 40-percent increase in funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Caligiuri said collaboration is one of the cancer program’s greatest assets. Another high point that he mentioned was advancement in clinical trials, where enrollment is higher at the OSUCCC – James than ever before. In fact, about one in every four patients participates in a clinical trial. The national average is much lower. Dr. Caligiuri also highlighted the success of Pelotonia, the annual grassroots bicycle tour that raises millions of dollars for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. Perhaps the crowning achievement for the cancer program in 2015 was the “exceptional” rating we received following a site review by the NCI. To learn more, view part two of Dr. Caligiuri’s address.
