Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, Director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital ended 2016 by looking back on a year of hefty accomplishment for the OSUCCC – James, as told through his annual State of the Cancer Program Address. The new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute opened two years ago, and “today our bed-occupancy rate is already 97.8 percent,” Dr. Caligiuri said. Compared to last year, the number of inpatient admissions is up 8.9 percent ; the number of clinic visits is up 11.5 percent outpatient visits are up 8.8 percent the number of surgeries is up 4.3 percent; radiation treatment are up 12.2 percent to; and chemotherapy treatments are up 14.3 percent. “Look at the chemo treatments 50,913 in 2016: That’s 200 a day, every day, and these are people who really need us,” Dr. Caligiuri said, adding that the team at the OSUCCC – James has been able to improve the quality of care as they care for more and more cancer patients. “The good news is we have wonderful, compassionate caregivers here,” Dr. Caligiuri said. The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute was a 2016 recipient of the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience, scoring in the 98th percentile nationally. The OSUCCC – James Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) was a finalist for the 2016 Schwartz Center’s National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award. This is the first time an entire unit has been a finalist for the award, which is traditionally given to an individual at a cancer center. “This says volumes about our staff and the care we deliver,” Dr. Caligiuri said. Progress in quality of care remains on the horizon as well. Recently, the Patient and Family Resource Center opened at the hospital; Phase 2 of the on-site Specialty Pharmacy is coming soon; and 72 additional beds will be added on the 10th and 12th floors, beginning in mid 2018, to meet the increased demand of patients and their families.   This part two of a four-part series on Dr. Michael Caligiuri’s annual State of the Cancer Program Address.
