“We’re really excited about 2021,” says Doug Ulman, president and CEO of Pelotonia, the annual bike ride that has raised $219 million for research at The James. There was no ride in 2020 due to COVID-19, but Pelotonia will be back on the road again in August with all-new routes and several new safety precautions. Ulman shares all of the details from the upcoming ride on our Cancer-Free World Podcast. Listen via the video player above or on Soundcloud. “The team has done a remarkable amount of work to think through how things might have to change in order to host a ride,” Ulman says. There will be nine, all-new routes in 2021, one of which will include a spin through Bexley, and others that will travel through Granville, where hundreds of people line the streets every year to cheer on riders, wave signs and ring cow bells. There are more one-day and two-day options, as well as some shorter routes. The rest stops will be redesigned to allow for physical distancing, and all the food at the rest stops will be pre-packaged. “The personal connections and the joy of the weekend” are the glue that keeps Pelotonia rolling, Ulman says. Everyone has been “touched by cancer, and we are so fortunate to have this amazing place here in Columbus. So many people don’t fully appreciate The James until they need it, and then they say, ‘How can I not be part of this powerful community?’ That’s a testament to the leadership of The James.”
