I’m a surgical oncologist and specialize in the areas of liver, pancreatic and stomach cancer. I’m passionate about my work because these cancers are aggressive and require specialized care and a positive, hopeful approach. At the OSUCCC – James, we emphasize that we may have options for these patients, even when they have been told to give up.
I also serve as program director for Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program and as an associate professor of surgical oncology for The Ohio State University College of Medicine. In 2012 and 2014 I received the Surgery Faculty Teaching Award, and I was rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. Additionally, I have published more than 100 papers related to gastrointestinal cancers and served as primary investigator of several cancer clinical trials.
One of the more important research projects I’ve worked on involves the early detection of cancer. Our team’s Pelotonia-funded project has focused on the development of a simple, low-cost biochip that may provide a patient-friendly early detection for lung and liver. With this project, we will evaluate the feasibility of this technique in an animal model and patient samples, and use the data to submit grant proposals.
Yet the best thing about working at The James is the chance to help patients directly. Our teams of highly trained specialists work together to treat cancer with a personalized approach.
