I’m a medical oncologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. I was named to the Castle Connolly list of “Regional Top Doctors” in 2019 was rated in the top 10 percent of physicians nationwide for patient satisfaction in 2014 and 2016.
I specialize in GU (or genitourinary) cancers, which include cancers of the prostate, bladder, kidneys and testicles. As a researcher, I’m very interested in experimental therapeutics and clinical trials. I’m particularly focused on evaluating both their effectiveness and their safety. I believe in combining state-of-the-art treatment with compassionate care, which is why the OSUCCC – James is the ideal place for what I do.
Being part of the team at OSUCCC – James is very inspirational to me professionally and personally. Working with such dedicated colleagues every day helps us all maintain high standards and set higher and higher goals for our work. I’m also inspired by the multidisciplinary approach that we take at Ohio State’s genitourinary medical oncology clinic because it’s so unique. I’m passionate about providing assistance to people in need and proud that I’ve spent my whole medical career serving the Columbus area.
In addition to my work at the OSUCCC – James, I serve on the Genitourinary Oncology core committee for ALLIANCE, a research group that works in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute. My own research has been published in many leading journals, including Cancer, Cancer Research, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of Immunotherapy.
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the university requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their university responsibilities. As of 11/21/2019, Dr. Monk has reported relationships with the companies or entities listed below. If you have questions about the relationships listed below, please ask the faculty member. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office.
The overall patient satisfaction rating is an average of all patient responses to the five questions gathered from the Outpatient Oncology survey, developed by Press Ganey Associates for use in oncology clinics across the country. On behalf of The James, Press Ganey administers the survey to patients who see our providers in an outpatient clinic office. For additional information about the patient satisfaction survey, please visit our Patient Satisfaction Survey page

Dr. Monk has been w/me & my care for 10 yrs. I not only consider him an excellent phys. but also a friend. Thank you.
best doctor ever!
Dr. Monk is particularly good at explaining options and recommendations - gives full info, respects patient and does not condescend -
Dr. Monk is the best. He is very patient w/my father, who is hard of hearing and takes a long time to answer the nurse & Dr. Monk's questions. Dr. Monk & nursing staff take as long as needed to answer my father's questions and address his (and our family's) concerns.
It is very clear that at The James the Doctors and their teams coordinate the treatments and care. Something you do not find in practices outside of The James.
