Joal Beane, MD
Academic Title: Assistant Professor in the College of Medicine
Research Program: Translational Therapeutics
About Me
More info forI am a surgical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of melanoma and sarcoma. I received my medical training at Indiana University School of Medicine and completed fellowships in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. As a member of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James, I focus my research on enhancing the efficacy of the adoptive transfer of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) for the treatment of metastatic solid tumors. My goals are to: explore the feasibility of generating TIL and then treating patients who harbor other solid tumors beyond melanoma; determine if TIL can be generated from primary resected tumors in patients with increased risk of recurrence to be used as a future therapy; and identify potential targets for gene editing to improve the efficacy of tumor-specific T cells. I have also partnered with the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology to study immune response to cancer and develop cellular-based immunotherapies and gene therapies for treating metastatic melanoma and sarcoma. Additionally, I serve as an assistant professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at The Ohio State University and as a member of several professional organizations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American College of Surgeons.
