I am an orthopaedic oncologist specializing in bone and soft tissue cancers in the arms, legs and pelvis. I serve as director of the Sarcoma program at The James and as chief of musculoskeletal oncology. I’m also the Director of the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at The OSU. I’m honored to be a part of a multi-disciplinary team that values working in close partnership with patients to develop innovative and effective treatment plans. I was also named to the Castle Connolly list of "America's Top Doctors” from 2010-2018.
At The James, we’re not just experts in cancer — we’re experts in your individual cancer. Sarcomas are a unique and rare medical condition that can vary in size, shape and location in the extremities. I ensure each patient receives a thorough explanation of treatment options, as well as a comprehensive medical and personal evaluation so that we can determine the best course of treatment together. As a personal guide through the journey from patient to survivor, I am continuously amazed by the strength of the patients we serve.
I also conduct clinical research trials to continue to improve the treatment of orthopaedic cancer. My work has been published in more than 60 peer-reviewed medical journals, most recently in the American Journal of Orthopedics, the Journal of Surgical Oncology and Applied Immunohistochemistry & Molecular Morphology.
I’ve received numerous awards and honors throughout my career. I’ve been named one of America’s best cancer doctors by Best Doctors in America and I’m proud to have earned several Excellence in Teaching awards and a Certificate of Excellence in Patient Service from The Ohio State University.
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. As of 12/20/2018, Dr. Mayerson has reported relationships with the companies or entities listed below. If you have questions about the relationships listed below, please ask the faculty member. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office.
The overall patient satisfaction rating is an average of all patient responses to the five questions gathered from the Outpatient Oncology survey, developed by Press Ganey Associates for use in oncology clinics across the country. On behalf of The James, Press Ganey administers the survey to patients who see our providers in an outpatient clinic office. Dr. Joel was so kind and caring. He was amazing and wanted to know what I knew about my situation so he could better help me understand the next steps. He made me feel very comfortable and I've very happy to have been referred to him.
Doctor was very personable and knowledgeable, would highly recommend him.
He took his time explaining everything to me. Then he answered all my questions as well as my wife's. He never acted like he was in a hurry or tried to rush us. He was GREAT!!!
