I am a hematologist and my area of expertise is treating patients with sickle cell disease, a non-cancerous blood disease that can cause a variety of very serious complications for patients. At the OSUCCC – James, I am a part of a multidisciplinary team that treats these patients and provides them with unique opportunities for clinical trials of alternative therapies to treat their disease.
I serve as director of sickle cell research for The Ohio State University and am co-director of the Sickle Cell Program. In addition, I’m involved in a variety of related national organizations, including the boards of the American Society of Hematology Sickle Cell Disease Guideline Committee and the Sickle Cell Adult Provider Network. I also serve an assistant professor of internal medicine for Ohio State, and have authored more than a dozen articles for publication as well as presented nearly 40 abstracts and presentations.
What I enjoy most working at The James is the tremendous desire of people to work together to provide optimal care for patients. We put aside our egos, collaborate and strive toward providing the best care and treatment for our patients in an effort to improve lives and outcomes.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the university requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their university responsibilities. As of 3/28/2017, Dr. Desai has reported financial relationships with the medical device, research and/or drug companies listed below. If you have questions about the relationships listed below, please ask the faculty member. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office at 614-293-7802.
