I am a physician-scientist. I provide clinical care for patients with lung cancer and my laboratory research is focused on characterizing the interactions between the immune system and lung cancer cells. Prior to joining the OSUCCC – James, I received training in England, Switzerland, Yale-New Haven Hospital and The University of Chicago. My laboratory is using advanced technologies including genetic analyses of cancer cells together with the capability to identify and track individual immune cells over time. Our goals are 1. To unravel the role the immune system plays in determining response and outcome to different therapies in lung cancer, 2. To develop tests that will accurately predict and detect early response to immunotherapy and 3. To utilize our findings to facilitate future development of cutting-edge immune-based therapies.
Over the past two decades, one of the most significant advancements in cancer treatment is the development of therapies that re-invigorate the immune system to eradicate tumor cells, induce long-lasting response and improve survival. However, the majority of patients still do not benefit from these therapies and there is only a limited understanding of how these agents impact individual immune cells. Our preliminary findings are very promising and received a Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2017. We hope to translate our findings into the field of ‘precision immuno-oncology’ by providing the foundation to further improve the outcomes for patients who respond to immunotherapies and more importantly to develop innovative immunotherapies for those who do not benefit from currently available treatments.
At the OSUCCC – James, our patients are our topmost priority, and as a world-class cancer center, we strive to provide compassionate care with a seasoned team of surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists and nursing staff in addition to conducting research that will further improve survival of lung cancer. I am benefiting from the excellent environment and also enjoy educating and encouraging students, including the next generation of physician-scientists, dedicated to advancing the state-of-the-art care of lung cancer patients.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the university requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their university responsibilities. As of 3/28/2017, Dr. Olugbile has reported no financial relationships with medical device, research and/or drug companies.
