I am a fellowship trained head and neck cancer and microvascular reconstructive surgeon with over 3 decades of experience. I specialize in treating benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck.  Specifically, this includes cancers of the oropharynx, thyroid, mouth or oral cavity, larynx, pharynx, salivary glands, lip, nasal cavity, and skull base. As of 2014, I serve as Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at OSU's College of Medicine. I am also the inaugural holder of the David E. Schuller, MD and Carole Schuller Chair in Otolaryngology. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, I was rated in the top 10 percent of physicians in the nation for patient satisfaction.

I focus my research not only on finding cancer cures but also on improving quality of life. Specifically, my areas of interest are HPV-related cancer cell biology, microvascular reconstructive surgery, development of novel therapeutics, and identification of serum and tissue tumor markers in head and neck cancer. Ultimately, my goal is to discover scientific breakthroughs that can be translated to clinical settings; this is the best way I have found to treat my patients and improve outcomes. Our team has a translational approach to research and we collaborate nationally and internationally with other experts.

I am passionate about my work at the OSUCCC – James because we deliver personalized care. As an institution, we value our patients most. For example, our multidisciplinary head and neck team meets weekly to advocate for patients and choose the best course of care at tumor board. In addition, my patients motivate me. Unfortunately, most of us have been touched by cancer in some way – whether a family member, friend, or patient, and I have learned from previous mentors that it is important to connect on a personal level with patients. This is why I bring more than my medical expertise to appointments. Instead, my approach to treating patients is to deliver the highest quality, cutting edge medical treatments while also ensuring that on a personal level, patients truly know that I feel compassion for each and every person I treat.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the university requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their university responsibilities. As of 3/28/2017, Dr. Teknos has reported financial relationships with the medical device, research and/or drug companies listed below. If you have questions about the relationships listed below, please ask the faculty member. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office at 614-293-7802.
