I’m a surgical oncologist treating patients with musculoskeletal cancers. My area of expertise is orthopaedic surgery, with a special focus on bone cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, spine surgery and limb salvage. The OSUCCC – James is home to one of the nation’s premier cancer-related orthopaedic surgery centers, where we provide comprehensive, individualized treatment for every patient.
I also serve as an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where I’ve received several distinguished teaching honors including being named Educator of the Year in 2012. My clinical interests include bone and soft tissue sarcomas in adults and children, complex limb reconstruction, metabolic bone disease and musculoskeletal infections.
In my work to find treatments for these types of cancers, I’ve co-authored medical articles on surgical oncology and soft tissue sarcomas, presented nearly three dozen medical abstracts worldwide and have contributed to 45 published manuscripts. Additionally, I serve on the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and as a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
I’m honored to partner with an extraordinary team of leaders who have a steadfast desire to create a cancer-free world.
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the university requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their university responsibilities. As of 11/21/2019, Dr. Scharschmidt has reported relationships with the companies or entities listed below. If you have questions about the relationships listed below, please ask the faculty member. If you have questions about how these relationships are monitored by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, please contact our Compliance Office.
The overall patient satisfaction rating is an average of all patient responses to the five questions gathered from the Outpatient Oncology survey, developed by Press Ganey Associates for use in oncology clinics across the country. On behalf of The James, Press Ganey administers the survey to patients who see our providers in an outpatient clinic office.
