About Me
More info forI am a family medicine physician who believes in a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to care that strongly emphasizes prevention. As a practicing clinician, I help patients manage chronic illnesses and I offer comprehensive primary care services to adults and adolescents. My patients can expect a collaborative relationship when they come to see me. I prioritize shared decision-making and always empower my patients to take active roles in their health care. My research is focused on preventing cancer deaths by expanding access to high-quality care and making system-wide health system improvements. I have led major colorectal cancer studies that revealed harmful variations in the quality of screening, lack of appropriate follow-up care for abnormal screening results and structural barriers to care. This work led to national system changes to enable more comprehensive and equitable access to colon cancer screenings. My work has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals and I am regularly invited to present my research at conferences across the United States and Canada. I am a member of the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Advisors ,and Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. I was recognized by President Barack Obama in 2011 with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers and recently honored with the Distinguished Scholars Seminar Award from the National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. In addition to my clinical and research responsibilities, I serve as chief equity officer at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and associate director at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. I am also proud to help train the next generation of providers in my role as a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
