I am a medical oncologist specializing in the care of patients with lung cancer. I passionately help people achieve the best outcomes possible, and I provide my patients comprehensive, compassionate care that is tailored to their unique needs and values. As a physician-scientist and a member of the Cancer Control Program at the OSUCCC – James, I am proud to be a leader in cancer prevention research. Currently, my primary focus is on identifying biomarkers that can be used in the clinic to assess breast and lung cancer risk, particularly those related to genetics and to lifestyle factors such as diet and tobacco use. My role has also included educating and mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists. I currently hold a T32 cancer prevention training grant for postdoctoral fellows funded by the National Cancer Institute. I am an emeritus professor of both Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and of the Division of Epidemiology for the College of Public Health. My experience included more than a decade serving as the deputy director of The James, during which I was also the Julius F. Stone Chair in Cancer Research. My responsibilities included overseeing the research programs at The James through strategic planning, recruitment, funding studies and development of research infrastructure. I established university-wide collaborations that translate basic research discoveries into cancer prevention and treatment strategies. Examples include the Beating Lung Cancer in Ohio (BLCIO) and the Study of Infections and Immune REspoNse (SIIREN) studies. I have published more than 300 studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals on topics ranging from toxicology and epidemiology to behavior and health disparities. I have directed multiple large research projects, including epidemiology studies and clinical trials funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). I previously led a study funded by the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Center of Excellence that focused on understanding why alcohol consumption can lead to breast cancer. Other projects focused on topics including tobacco-related cancer risks, the health impacts of electronic cigarettes and health policy. I am a fellow in the American College of Epidemiology. I previously served as president of the American Society of Preventive Oncology, and I led the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the American Association for Cancer Research.
