Education and Training – CAMELOT

About Us

The Center for Cancer Mentoring, Education, Leadership and Oncology-Related Training (CAMELOT) serves as the centralized hub fostering cancer research and education for all levels of learners and disseminating those opportunities across the university.

About Us

The Center for Cancer Mentoring, Education, Leadership and Oncology-Related Training (CAMELOT) is the main training office for the OSUCCC – James coordinating all cancer research training and education activities. CAMELOT's initiatives span from high school education through undergraduate and graduate training and extend to postdoctoral training. The program also encompasses faculty development and mentoring and leadership training for all faculty members and other professionals engaged in cancer research.

About CAMELOT members

CAMELOT has robust support from the OSUCCC – James each year. CAMELOT collaborates with each of the five research programs to disseminate information and address needs for many communities.

CAMELOT coordinates training and education initiatives through:

  • Offering direct opportunities (e.g., for high school students, Pelotonia scholars and undergraduate student summer research opportunities).
  • Working with college and university partners to support and advertise trainee development activities to OSUCCC – James trainees and faculty (e.g., grant writing, scientific writing and career development).
  • Supporting grant submissions by early-career faculty.
  • Providing pre- and post- support for training grant submissions.

The Pelotonia Scholars Program started 15 years ago and provides stipends to trainees from the undergraduate to the postdoctoral level; 198 scholarship awards were granted. In the current funding cycle, CAMELOT programming supported additional trainees, as well. Pelotonia is a community that raises millions of dollars for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James through an annual cycling event series.

New initiatives implemented by CAMELOT this funding period include two cancer research-focused pipeline initiatives, one for local high school students and another for The Ohio State University undergraduates. We also developed a trainee tracking application, Training Gear, which provides detailed tracking of trainees and outcomes.

Key program objectives

The Specific Aims of the CAMELOT program include:

  • Aim 1: Provide integration and coordination of training opportunities for cancer research across the OSUCCC – James.
