Skull Base Surgery Fellowship

Fellowship Program Director: Kyle VanKoevering, MD

The Skull Base Surgery Fellowship at The Ohio State University offers advanced comprehensive training in skull base surgery. The fellowship is designed for those individuals who are planning a full-time academic career with a special interest and emphasis in skull base surgery.

The Comprehensive Skull Base Surgery Program is part of the Head and Neck Oncology Section of The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and a critical building block of a multispecialty service line oriented group. The fellow will be exposed to a disease-driven treatment paradigm comprising traditional, minimally access, and minimally invasive procedures and participate in the care of out- and inpatients. We perform over 250 surgeries per year with our neurological surgery counterparts.

The fellow participates with the senior staff in all decisions relative to the prescribed treatment. Operative responsibility is assigned commensurate with ability. Otolaryngology residents and medical students are also assigned to the team; thus, providing the Skull Base Surgery fellow with the opportunity to enhance teaching skills. The fellow is encouraged to attend advanced sessions sponsored by the Comprehensive Cancer Center and to participate in other activities of the Head and Neck Oncology Section. In addition, we request participation in the educational and research activities of the Comprehensive Skull Base Surgery Program and the Anatomical Laboratory for Visuospatial Innovations in Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery (ALT-VISION).

Interdisciplinary surgical activities exist primarily with other Divisions of the Departments of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Neurological Surgery.  The fellow works closely with the interdisciplinary teaching faculty.
