Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Ohio State Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (OSU-TCORS)
The Ohio State University’s Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (OSU-TCORS) invites applications from individuals interested in obtaining postdoctoral research experience in the areas of:
- Regulatory policy, behavioral health (psychology, sociology, communications, or economics) biostatistics, epidemiology, and other population science.
- Regulatory policy, analytical chemistry, environmental health sciences, and toxicology
OSU-TCORS, located in Columbus, is one of 7 TCORS established by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The 7 Centers conduct research needed to ensure that U.S. tobacco regulatory actions are based on sound and relevant scientific evidence.
The postdoctoral training program in tobacco regulatory science research will include: 1) a specialized curriculum, 2) mentored research, and 3) development of a grant proposal. The specialized curriculum will include core didactic training in tobacco regulatory science, population health, research ethics, grant writing, and health equity. To facilitate transdisciplinary training, trainees will be matched with at least two mentors from different but complementary disciplines.
Postdoctoral trainees will gain research experience by working on OSU-TCORS research projects. Through the integrative theme, “Flipping the Script”: Using the Industry’s Nicotine Playbook to Maximize Public Health, the OSU-TCORS will use the consumer response model to understand how industry nicotine manipulations in electronic cigarettes (ECs) and oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) are impacting product appeal, abuse liability, and toxicity. The projects will inform product standards and marketing regulations on nicotine that will dissuade youth from using ECs and ONPs but still provide a satisfying and less harmful alternative for adult tobacco users. The OSU-TCORS projects will inform the following scientific FDA priority domains: Product Composition and Design, Toxicity, Addiction, Health Effects, Behavior, and Marketing Influences.
Program Eligibility
We are looking for individuals with a PhD, DrPH, MD, or equivalent to work on Projects 1 and 2 (descriptions can be found here). OSU-TCORS offers competitive salary and benefits, opportunities for pilot research support, and resources to support travel to scientific meetings. Prior relevant research and a strong commitment to a research program in tobacco regulatory science are desirable. Applicants will be considered for admission based on the quality of academic doctoral or professional school preparation and the rigor of their research.
