Membership Guidelines

Summary

The review of appointment of individuals as members of the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) is the responsibility of the PIIO Director and Leadership. Applications will be reviewed on a monthly basis. Current membership of the PIIO will be reviewed on an annual basis to determine continuation of membership.

Membership Criteria

Full Member

To obtain FULL membership status in the PIIO, an investigator must either have an active faculty appointment at The Ohio State University, or an affiliated institution, and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be a Principal Investigator on an actively funded, immuno-oncology (IO) specific NCI or other peer-reviewed, IO-focused research grant or project within a multi-investigator grant (as defined by NCI guidelines). Members who have lost grant funding have two years to obtain new funding before being removed from membership.
  • Be an investigator that makes substantial contributions to (IO) specific cancer research. Significant contributions could be: 1) a PI of a national or investigator-initiated IO trial; 2) an essential team member of an IO-focused team project; 3) an essential contributor to authoring high-impact, IO-focused manuscripts; 4) have an established IO-focused research program; or 5) a director or co-director of a shared resource and make substantial contributions to scientific research.
  • Be a senior leader in the cancer program whose research focus is IO specific.
  • PIIO/TIU joint recruits

Introductory Member

Faculty interested in IO specific cancer research, and within five years of their faculty appointment at Ohio State or an affiliated institution, may be granted Introductory Member status. Other introductory members may be faculty who have performed research in other scientific areas but have expressed interest and are actively seeking to develop or significantly contribute to IO-focused research (e.g. by obtaining IO-related pilot funding). Introductory members have the same benefits of membership as full members. It is expected that introductory members will seek IO specific NCI or other peer-reviewed funding in cancer research as a Principal Investigator. Other significant contributions could be as PI of an IO specific cancer trial, being an essential team member of an IO focused team project or being an essential contributor to authoring IO-focused manuscripts. Introductory members are also expected to actively participate in program meetings, present research seminars, work collaboratively on research projects within and among the PIIO Centers, use the Immune Monitoring and Discovery Platform, attend the Annual PIIO Symposium, and if applicable, fully participate in the Institute’s mission to accrue patients to IO clinical trials.

Application Procedure

To apply for PIIO membership, applicants must submit the following information to the office of the Director of the PIIO:

IO Centers of Excellence Alignment

Full PIIO members are typically aligned with only one PIIO Center of Research Excellence. If the research efforts and funding of a member cross two centers, the director or his designate may allow alignment with more than one research program. Introductory members may only align with one center.

Members wanting to transfer between PIIO Centers of Research Excellence must submit detailed written request to the director of the PIIO. The director of the PIIO will consult with the appropriate center leaders and recommend a change to center alignment before any change should be approved.

Membership Benefits

  • All members are provided preferential scheduling for the PIIO’s Immune Monitoring and Discovery Platform shared resource, yet this resource is available to all researchers who first consult with the shared resource director.
  • All members are eligible to apply for internal PIIO funding opportunities.
  • All members will be placed on the PIIO e-mail distribution list that provides information on internal and external funding opportunities, special seminars and updates to other PIIO activities.
  • All members have the opportunity to present at PIIO sponsored events such as weekly research in progress meetings, special seminars, and at the Annual IO Symposium.
