The Hanel Lab

The Hanel Lab team at the OSUCCC – James, led by cancer research specialist and principal investigator Walter Hanel, MD, PhD, focuses on conducting cutting-edge research and developing groundbreaking treatments for lymphoma.

T-cell lymphomas are a group of non-Hodgkin lymphomas that are extremely challenging to treat. Compared to B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, treatment discovery progress has been slower, and new, more effective treatments are desperately needed for T-cell lymphomas.

Specifically, the research specialists in the Hanel Lab focus on developing new research models of T-cell lymphomas that more faithfully recapitulate the survival signals driving these diseases in patients. Using these models, the Hanel Lab scientists work to develop better treatment approaches that are not only more selective for T-lymphoma cells, but that also target signals within the tumor microenvironment responsible for disease progression and therapy resistance.

Mission

At the OSUCCC – James, the Hanel Lab’s research mission is to explore and understand the underlying biology of lymphomas, which will translate to helping find new treatments for patients with lymphoma.

Who We Are

Led by physician and research expert Dr. Walter Hanel, the Hanel Lab scientists consider themselves to be a small but dynamic lymphoma team, where passion and innovation converge to develop groundbreaking treatments for lymphoma. By harnessing a wealth of expertise and creativity, these researchers explore novel therapeutic approaches tailored to improve patient outcomes.

Equipped with essential research tools and a collaborative spirit, this dedicated team of researchers works together closely to investigate the underlying mechanisms of lymphoma and identify promising treatment targets. The lab thrives on a culture of curiosity and teamwork, in which each member’s contributions are valued and encouraged. This symbiotic setting fosters close-knit collaboration, enabling these scientists to respond quickly to emerging findings and pivot strategies as needed. Together, they are paving the way for an even brighter future in lymphoma care.
