Shang Lab

Our Research Team

Learn about the team of experts conducting research at the Shang Lab, led by internationally recognized cancer control specialist and principal investigator Ce Shang, PhD.

Dr. Shang focuses on research that advances public health through cancer prevention. Through cutting-edge research that examines how regulatory policies can reduce health-compromising behaviors, experts in the Shang Lab are working to inform global health policies, as well as health policies at the national, state and community levels.

In addition to Dr. Shang’s research work, she is an assistant professor in the Division of Medical Oncology at The Ohio State University. She is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Economic Association, the American Society of Health Economists and the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.

As a member of the Center for Tobacco Research and the Cancer Control Program at the OSUCCC – James, Dr. Shang is a health economist with extensive experience in regulatory science. Her research evaluates the effectiveness of policies that regulate tobacco, alcohol and recreational marijuana, with a focus on taxation.

In these studies, Dr. Shang and her team of experts integrate preference research, behavioral economics and statistical modeling to investigate cancer-causing behaviors and the impact of regulations on these behaviors.

She currently serves as a principal investigator or co-investigator on a number of NIH-funded research projects, including a pair of studies funded by the National Cancer Institute that examine smokers’ decision-making about tobacco use and the impact of tobacco control policies in the nicotine delivery market.

Dr. Shang’s work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed scientific journals, including American Journal of Medicine, Tobacco Control, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, Preventive Medicine and Addiction. She was also one of six peer reviewers to receive the 2020 Reviewer of the Year Award from Tobacco Control, a leading journal for tobacco control research.
