The Comparative Pathology and Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR) supports preclinical efficacy and toxicity animal studies, as well as translational studies that utilize human tissues procured for research. Comprehensive services provided by the CPDISR include: animal blood and other biofluid analyses; macroscopic and microscopic examinations of full tissue sets from various species of laboratory animals; comprehensive histology services on paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues, encompassing special histochemical stains and immunohistochemical / immunofluorescent stains labeling optimized for animal and human tissues; slide digitization and quantitative image analysis; and hands-on training and consultation for select techniques.
CPDISR comparative pathologists are experts in the normal anatomy and physiology, background age- and strain-/breed-related lesions, infectious pathogens, husbandry practices and experimental models of various animal model species. Lesion recognition and interpretation within individual investigations provides a critical component to research that incorporates animal models.
Key program objectives
The Specific Aims of the CPDISR are to:
- Aim 1: Provide comparative pathology consultation support - CPDISR provides the consultative services of board-certified comparative pathologists to OSUCCC – James investigators for optimal experimental design, sample submission, data analysis and post-study support, including pathology-specific grant and manuscript preparation support and facilitating interactions with other shared resources.
- Aim 2: Provide comparative pathology and histology services - We provide the expertise and technical services of board-certified comparative pathologists, pathology and medical technologists and histotechnologists to support all studies utilizing translational animal models, human tissues, organoids and cell lines.
- Aim 3: Provide digital pathology services - CPDISR performs brightfield and fluorescence slide digitization overseen by comparative pathologists, and provides streamlined pipelines for routine and specialty services, including spatial transcriptomics.
Cross-institutional work
The CPDISR is used primarily by OSUCCC – James researchers and other investigators at The Ohio State University biomedical community and affiliated institutions.
