The Department of Radiation Oncology at The Ohio State University is one of the premier radiation oncology programs in the United States, providing state-of-the- art radiation therapy with internationally recognized medical expertise, education and research.

The department, which is part of Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), has opened The Ohio State University International Training Center for Radiation Oncology to provide training to radiation therapy professionals from around the world. The center is the first dedicated university-affiliated Varian radiation oncology training center in the United States. The center provides hands-on training for radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, radiation oncologists and other cancer specialists from around the world in a state-of-the-art environment.

The center also provides customizable courses for individual technology needs. Course participants will learn the basics of radiation oncology through the hands-on use of all related technologies and through observation of the radiation therapy process. They also will learn from multiple disciplines regarding their roles and responsibilities in a radiotherapy department.

Classes Include:

  • Varian TrueBeamTM Physics Commissioning
  • Rapid ArcTM Physics Commissioning
  • Optical Surface Monitoring System (OSMS)/Vision Radiation Therapy for Radiation Therapists, Physicists and Physicians
  • Introduction to Radiation Oncology (orientation for non-clinical personnel)

Advanced Classes Include:

  • Advanced Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) – This class provides additional stereotactic radiosurgery training in gamma knife and/or linac-based planning and treatment.
  • Advanced Rapid ArcTM
  • Advanced Motion Management and Tracking
  • Additional classes and programs that can be customized based on needs

Who Should Attend?

Hospital systems interested in hands-on Varian TrueBeamTM training for their radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists and radiation oncologists should contact the center to participate in the standard curriculum, in advanced training or in a customized combination of the two. This program is designed for our international partners and geared to teach cancer specialists the most cutting-edge approach to treating cancer.
