Our primary research objective in the Department of Radiation Oncology is to develop personalized care strategies that are tailored towards the individual patient. There is accumulating evidence that cancers can demonstrate significant molecular and genetic heterogeneity, although they may be derived from the same tissue type (i.e., breast, prostate, lung, etc.) and may demonstrate similar appearances under the microscope. Therefore, one treatment that is highly effective for one patient may be completely ineffective for another.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is actively conducting research on the clinical, translational, and basic levels to personalize care geared to fighting any individual’s cancer in a highly effective, targeted and compassionate manner.
Translational and Basic Research
The translational and basic cancer biology research division within The Ohio State University’s Department of Radiation Oncology is directed by the Chair of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Arnab Chakravarti, and was created to investigate research in radiation and tumor biology that will lead to the development of clinical trials and advances in patient outcomes.
Overall Mission: To personalize care for cancer patients through advancements in our understanding of the molecular, genetic, and epigenetic mechanisms of response of tumors to conventional and molecularly-based targeted therapies.
