Primary peritoneal cancer is incredibly rare; it accounts for less than 1% of all cancer diagnoses annually. When it is present, it’s often not diagnosed until the condition has advanced and has started causing symptoms. Experts at the OSUCCC – James are exploring new treatment options through collaborative efforts, including research.
Innovation through collaboration and research
At the OSUCCC – James, our team of experts work diligently to research and better understand the underlying causes of cancer. Through that research, we’re able to develop new treatment techniques. For rare cancers, such as peritoneal, this research is critical to improving treatment outcomes in those who are diagnosed with it.
Every day, the OSUCCC – James HIPEC Treatment Program team strives to achieve the highest levels of expertise, working collaboratively to conduct impactful clinical research. When this is combined with innovative translational science, it leads to advanced treatment strategies.
With this goal in mind, we’ve developed several critical collaborations within the OSUCCC – James as well as with our community partners, including:
- Cancer and Aging Resiliency Clinic (CARE)
- Translational Therapeutics Program
- Center for Cancer Engineering — Curing Cancer Through Research in Engineering and Sciences (CCE-CURES)
- Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN)
- Total Cancer Care Program
- Other non-Ohio State/community collaborations
Through these partnerships, we hope to provide optimal peritoneal cancer care for all by sharing the latest research.
Peritoneal cancer and clinical trials
The OSUCCC – James is one of the few cancer centers in the country funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. This designation offers those who have been diagnosed with peritoneal cancer earlier access to novel targeted treatments that are just becoming available.
By offering access to some of the country’s most advanced clinical trials, the OSUCCC – James offers access to some additional treatment options for peritoneal cancer that aren’t available elsewhere. This includes treatment options from chemotherapy to specialized surgeries and beyond.
If you’ve been diagnosed with peritoneal cancer, would like a second opinion or would like to speak with a peritoneal disease specialist, please call The James Line at 800-293-5066 or 614-293-5066 (Ohio) to make an appointment.
