Team Buckeye’s “I Ride for You” program is building connections in the fight against cancer. The program serves as a partnership between student riders on Team Buckeye and cancer survivors. Students are matched with cancer survivors who have been treated by The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
The “I Ride for You” program requires no financial obligation of the survivor. Once paired with a rider, survivors are encouraged to tell their family and friends about their Team Buckeye Student Rider in order to help that individual reach their Pelotonia fundraising goal. A Note to Students from Katie
Dear I Ride for You Participant,
Congratulations! You have signed up to get on a bike and ride in Pelotonia to raise money for ground-breaking cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). You have joined a community of people who are steadfast in their effort to change the world. Together, we are going to end cancer.
As a three-year Team Buckeye Student Rider in Pelotonia, I love to ask others, “Why do you ride?” I have heard countless inspiring stories from students, all of whom have their own story to tell about why they ride. I first joined Pelotonia to honor my dad, who died of cancer during my freshman year at Ohio State. He is still one of the reasons I ride, but my story has grown, and it’s all thanks to Team Buckeye’s I Ride for You program.
I Ride for You unites Ohio State’s student community with patients at the OSUCCC – James. By participating in this program, you can enhance your student experience by riding for a current or former cancer patient at the OSUCCC – James. I was matched with Kristin, a mother of two who was battling breast cancer. Kristin and I met last spring at Team Buckeye’s I Ride for You brunch, where our journey began as friends and comrades in the fight against cancer.
Over the next few months, I got to know Kristin’s family and support system. I met her incredible husband, Richard, and her inspiring children, Jack and Annie. During Pelotonia weekend in August, they were there cheering me on. When I crossed the 180-mile finish line, they were waiting for me. Jack was holding a sign on which he had written, “Thanks to you Riders, OSUCCC, and Katie, my Mommy gets to take me to my first day of preschool next week!” At that moment, I realized I was no longer riding just for my dad. I was also riding for Kristin, her family, an entire community of families and for a cancer-free world. I crossed the finish line with a greater purpose than I could have ever imagined.
I Ride for You has shown me that riding in Pelotonia is about so much more than riding for my own story. As you read this, life-saving cancer research funded by Pelotonia is being conducted here at Ohio State. As a rider, you can be part of it by hopping on a bike. You can also make your ride even more meaningful by riding for a patient at the OSUCCC – James. Register today for the I Ride for You program. Grow your story. And together, we will end cancer.
