Support and services

  • All assessments are performed and interventions are implemented in one visit.

    Topics addressed may include:

    • Audiology: In general, older adults are more likely to experience hearing loss than younger adults, and the self-reported prevalence of hearing loss is higher in older adults who have cancer than in older adults without cancer.
    • Memory/cognition: A registered nurse or nurse practitioner will administer a cognitive assessment that is designed for timely diagnosis of memory impairments so appropriate interventions can be implemented.
    • Medication issues: A pharmacist will provide an in-depth medication/supplement review, including addressing any treatment interactions, and will address any other medication concerns.
    • Nutrition evaluation: A registered dietitian will discuss current diet, oral supplements, appetite, caloric needs and any barriers to oral intake (e.g., difficulty swallowing) with each patient. The Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) will also be performed at this time.
    • Physical therapy: A physical therapist will develop a plan to promote movement, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability.
    • Caregiver, financial or home-safety concerns
    • Health-related quality of life issues

  • The initial clinic visit is a multi-provider, comprehensive appointment that typically lasts about two and a half hours.

During this time the care team will create a personalized care and treatment plan.

  • Often older adults have different needs related to cancer care; these clinics were designed with those needs in mind.

The services offered are for adults with any type of cancer, at any stage.
