Expanding cancer care at The James to better serve our patients

The James Outpatient Care is home to several services and clinics. It is home to the OSUCCC – James first outpatient cancer surgery facility. Through this unique, state-of-the-art center we offer comprehensive care in one location to create better outcomes and more hope for you, from diagnosis through treatment to survivorship.

The facility also includes central Ohio’s first proton therapy center, in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, that provides children and adults with the latest radiotherapy available.

The 385,000-square-foot center allows us to further our mission to provide the most personalized services available. The building is equipped with eight operating rooms, multiple cancer-specific clinics and the Proton Therapy Center.

While expanding cancer treatment offerings and standardizing care, the outpatient center also features research space to accommodate advancements in future cancer care.

Services, programs and clinics

  • Our already robust digital pathology program has its own space at The James Outpatient Care, allowing radiologists and oncologists to see images of patients’ biopsies and other tissue samples in real time — without having to wait for them to be sent to a facility.

The technology promises faster, more accurate diagnoses and second-opinion consultations, which is especially useful with rare cancers.

  • The James Outpatient Care is home to several clinics, which allow you to receive all the care — medical procedures, drug therapies, mental health services, rehabilitation — you might need in one location.

    Some of the clinics include:

    • Hematology, for all types of blood cancers including leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma
    • Genitourinary cancers, for bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancers
    • Infusion, for chemotherapy and immunotherapy
    • Cancer and Aging Resiliency Clinic
    • Survivorship Clinic
    • Genetic Counseling

  • This facility has a clinical core lab, an on-site blood bank, research team space and radiotherapy-specific research – including proton therapy – that is unique to the OSUCCC – James. It also has a dedicated Clinical Treatment Unit (CTU) with a team who will provide treatments through innovative cancer clinical trials, some not available anywhere else.

Clinical trials are at the heart of treating many types of cancer and are the way we move research forward to cures. These spaces allow our oncology staff to provide unique, specialized treatment options and care backed by the region’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

  • Using our eight operating rooms with 12 extended-recovery beds, which allow up to 24 hours of post-surgery care, we’re able to provide a myriad of procedures and surgeries on an outpatient basis.

Some types of surgeries that happen at The James Outpatient Care include:

    • Genitourinary (GU) oncology surgery, such as prostate cancer surgery
    • Gynecological oncology surgery, such as robotic surgery
    • Surgeries related to melanoma, thyroid malignancies and breast cancer
    • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
    • Bronchoscopies to diagnose thoracic or lung cancers
    • Soft-tissue biopsies
    • Interventional radiology
