Hospitals Honor Congressman for Work to Ensure Ohioans Have Access to Specialty Cancer Care

August 22, 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers (ADCC) recognized the health care policy and cancer advocacy efforts of U.S. Congressman Pat Tiberi by honoring him with the ADCC Congressional Champions Award.

The Ohio State University President Michael Drake and Michael Caligiuri, MD, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute presented the award to Tiberi at the close of a Medicare roundtable event hosted at the OSUCCC –James.

The ADCC is an 11-member hospital alliance of dedicated cancer centers that exclusively treat cancer patients. The ADCC Congressional Champions Award is given annually to a congressional leader in recognition of leadership in advancing cancer care. Congressman Tiberi was honored for leading efforts to continue to protect and promote the highest quality cancer care for patients.

“An increasing amount of cancer treatment is being provided in an outpatient setting – which is better for our patients and their families and more efficient – however, healthcare reimbursement policies had to be revised to make certain that insurers would continue to provide coverage for patients,” said Caligiuri. “Congressman Tiberi’s steadfast efforts have ensured -- once again -- that patients in our state have access to the specialized oncology services they need to best treat their cancer.”

Tiberi has served as the representative for Ohio’s 12th district since Jan. 3, 2001, which encompasses communities north and east of Columbus. Prior to his term in Congress, he served in the Ohio House of Representative from 1993 to 2000 and was the House Majority Leader.

“Congressman Tiberi has led the charge on solutions to increase choices, reduce costs and put patients at the center of our health care system. We look forward to continuing our work with him on policies that promote improved cancer outcomes and finding the next generation of cures,” adds Jennifer Carlson, associate vice president for external relations and advocacy at the OSUCCC – James.
