COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announces the following awards, honors and more that were recently given to the organization, teams or individuals:   Castle Connolly 2023 Top Doctors recognized in Columbus Monthly  The 2023 Castle Connolly Top Doctors list contains more than 450 Ohio State physicians, including many who treat patients with cancer at the OSUCCC – James.   Each year, Columbus Monthly magazine partners with Castle Connolly, a health care research company, to evaluate physicians based on their education, research leadership, interpersonal skills, professional success and disciplinary history. Doctors on the list exhibit quality outcomes through high-procedure volume, advanced diagnostic and treatment options, and cutting-edge research.     The newest list of central Ohio top physicians was published in the August 2023 issue of Columbus Monthly.  Copeland steps down as GOG Foundation president following successful tenure Larry Copeland, MD, professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Ohio State, has stepped down as president of the GOG Foundation (GOG-F), a title he had held since 2017, and now serves as immediate past president. The GOG-F is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising the standard of care in gynecologic oncology by promoting excellence in clinical and basic research involving cancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva.    According to The Cancer Letter, Copeland presided over unprecedented growth in the GOG-F clinical trials program, particularly in GOG-Partners, including a greatly expanded clinical trials portfolio, expansion and engagement of the investigator base, development of a clinical trial mentorship program, and multiple educational initiatives focused on novel agents and clinical trial design and execution.  Bechtel named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Regulation Mark Bechtel, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, has been named the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Regulation. Bechtel has served as president of the State Medical Board of Ohio and on the editorial boards of leading health care journals. He holds numerous awards, including two presidential citations from the American Academy of Dermatology and a distinguished service award from the Ohio Dermatological Association.   Luke appointed as chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation  Whitney Luke, MD, has been appointed as chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in The Ohio State University College of Medicine after serving as interim chair since July 2021. Her appointment will be effective pending approval by the university’s board of trustees.  Luke joined the department in 2013 as a clinical assistant professor, becoming vice chair of Clinical Operations in 2018 and rising to clinical associate professor in 2019 and clinical professor in 2023. She also serves as medical director of Oncology Rehabilitation and as program director for the Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship, which is one of only 11 such fellowship programs in the nation.    Luke also is credited with creating and implementing the OSUCCC – James inpatient cancer rehabilitation program — which was first in Ohio, second in the United States and third in the world to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities — as well as the outpatient cancer rehabilitation and interventional pain program. ###
