COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announces the following awards, honors, grants and more that were recently given to the organization, teams or individuals: Mims and Eisfeld inducted into prestigious medical honor society Alice Mims, MD, MSCR, co-leader of the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program at the OSUCCC – James, and Ann-Kathrin Eisfeld, MD, director of the Clara D. Bloomfield Center for Leukemia Outcomes Research, were inducted into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious medical honor societies. Only 100 physicians are elected annually to the ASCI, and only 15 Ohio State University physicians hold this honor, which recognizes individuals for outstanding achievements in biomedical research that has helped advance scientific discovery and improve patient care. Dr. Mims, a professor in the Division of Hematology, specializes in treating patients with acute and chronic myeloid diseases, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Her research focuses on developing and evaluating the effectiveness of new therapies for patients with AML and other myeloid malignancies. Dr. Eisfeld, an associate professor in the Division of Hematology, specializes in treating patients with acute leukemias. Her research and scientific contributions that led to her election center on genetic underpinning of patients with myeloid disorders, as well as the impact of micro- and macroenvironmental changes and genetic ancestry on the disease course of leukemia patients.  Hyzak lands NCI-funded fellowship for MAPCI training program Kathryn Hyzak, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ohio State, was accepted into a highly competitive National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded fellowship program titled “Methods for Adapting and Personalizing Cancer Control Interventions (MAPCI).” The MAPCI training program is hosted by the Data Science for Dynamic Intervention Decision-Making Center (d3center) at the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center. The program includes online preparation, a four-day in-person institute and post-institute mentorship. Its goal is to guide participants in developing a grant proposal focused on adapting and personalizing interventions. Dr. Hyzak is a formally trained implementation scientist who focuses on improving the use, implementation and sustainment of interventions in real-world treatment settings for individuals living with traumatic brain injury. Recent evidence demonstrates that sustaining a traumatic brain injury can increase the risk for brain cancer and malignant brain tumors. Bechtel elected president of State Medical Board of Ohio Mark Bechtel, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Dermatology at Ohio State, was elected president of the State Medical Board of Ohio, an entity that ensures that individuals practicing medicine in this state meet the sufficient standards of education, training, competence and ethics. As a dermatologist.at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, Dr. Bechtel treats a wide range of conditions, including skin cancer. Among his numerous awards and honors are being named to the Physician Care Connection Hall of Fame in 2023, two presidential citations from the American Academy of Dermatology and a Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Dermatological Association. Yount elected as American Academy of Microbiology fellow The American Academy of Microbiology has elected Jacob Yount, PhD, a member of the Cancer Biology Program at the OSUCCC – James and a professor of Microbial Infection and Immunity at Ohio State, as a fellow to its Class of 2026 Fellows of the academy, the honorific leadership group and scientific think tank within the American Society for Microbiology, are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-review process based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Dr. Yount’s research focuses on understanding and combating human respiratory and cardiac viral diseases. His work on host-pathogen interactions, antiviral immunity and long-term consequences of infection sheds light on pathways that are relevant to cancer development and progression. Ranganathan’s research selected for oral presentation at Best Abstract Session of national Tandem Meetings Rathan Kumar, a graduate research associate in the lab of Parvathi Ranganathan, PhD, delivered an oral presentation about their graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) research during the Best Abstract Session at the Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Tandem Meetings of ASTCT and CIBMTR in Salt Lake City. Being selected for the Best Abstract Session is a high honor bestowed by the ASTCT (American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy) and the CIBMTR (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research). Their presentation was titled “BET Inhibition Blunts Antibody Production and Macrophage-Mediated Fibrosis in Bronchiolitis Obliterans Chronic GVHD.”  Dr. Ranganathan, an associate professor of Hematology at Ohio State and a member of the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program at the OSUCCC – James, studies mechanisms regulating dysfunctional immune responses following an allogeneic (from a donor) hematopoietic cell transplant with the goal of developing selective strategies that abrogate GVHD while preventing disease relapse.
