COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announces the following awards and more that were recently given to the organization, teams or individuals:     Clinton elected as Fellow in American Society for Nutrition Steven Clinton, MD, PhD, professor of medical oncology and co-leader of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention (MCC) Program at the OSUCCC – James, has been elected as a Fellow by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). This is the highest honor the ASN bestows, recognizing individuals for lifetime achievement and distinguished careers in nutrition. Besides his research in nutrition and cancer ranging from molecular and cell biology to clinical trials and epidemiology, Dr. Clinton has served the National Academy of Sciences to establish dietary reference intakes for nutrients and has served the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to establish Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which impact U.S. government food and agricultural policies.   In addition, his service to the World Cancer Research Fund established diet and exercise guidelines for cancer prevention and survivorship that have impacted government policies around the globe. Dr. Clinton will be honored with the other Class of 2023 ASN Fellows on July 23 in Boston at the ASN’s annual flagship meeting, NUTRITION 2023. “These esteemed individuals have dedicated their careers to advancing our field and improving health around the world,” says ASN President Martha Belury, PhD, professor of food science and technology and member of the MCC Program at the OSUCCC – James.      Nationwide Children’s Hospital Named to U.S. News Best Children’s Hospital Honor Roll  Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which has multiple staff from the Ohio State College of Medicine and the OSUCCC – James, has again been named to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, achieving two new milestones this year. First, this marks a decade of consecutive appearances on this list of the country’s 10 best children’s hospitals. Second, the hospital’s No. 6 ranking in 2023 is its highest ever on this list. As a group, the Nationwide Children’s rankings for individual medical specialties are also the highest ever achieved, with seven in the top 10 – including cancer (No. 9) – and three in the top five (Pulmonary Medicine at No. 3, Nephrology at No. 4, and Cardiology and Heart Surgery at No. 5).      Pollock delivers prestigious memorial lecture at Yale University   Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, director of the OSUCCC, presented “New Directions in Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma” as the 63rd Annual Samuel Clark Harvey Memorial Lecture co-hosted by the departments of Surgery and Neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine on June 30. An internationally known surgical oncologist and researcher who specializes in treating patients with soft tissue sarcomas, Dr. Pollock also is a professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology, holds the Klotz Chair in Cancer Research and directs the Sarcoma Research Laboratory at Ohio State.  Established in 1956, the Harvey Lecture honors the memory of an acclaimed general surgeon who served as professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at Yale from 1924-47. Dr. Harvey, who died in 1953, also is considered a pioneer in neurosurgery.      Sigmund chosen to participate in ASH Leadership Institute Audrey Sigmund, MD, assistant professor of hematology and member of the Leukemia Research Program at the OSUCCC – James, has been selected to participate in the 2023 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Advocacy Leadership Institute, which will be held Oct. 16-17 at ASH headquarters in Washington, D.C. The institute helps ASH members learn more about advocacy, health policy, the legislative process and how to become engaged in ASH activities.    Dr. Sigmund is a hematologist who specializes in treating patients with B-cell malignancies, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma. Her research focuses on analyzing outcomes for patients with these diseases, with an emphasis on cellular therapies. She also has an interest in developing strategies to better support cancer patients once they have completed treatment.     Carbone receives 2023 Bonnie J. Addario Lectureship Award  David Carbone, MD, PhD, director of the Thoracic Oncology Center and co-leader of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James, received the 2023 Bonnie J. Addario Lectureship Award from GO2 for Lung Cancer for his work in developing treatments for this disease. GO2, a leader in patient advocacy and lung cancer awareness, presented the award to Dr. Carbone at the 24th International Lung Cancer Conference (ILCC) held July 27-29 in Huntington Beach, California.   Bonnie J. Addario, co-founder of GO2, says the organization recognizes Dr. Carbone’s “commitment to increasing access to comprehensive biomarker testing to ensure patients can receive the most effective treatments.” Dr. Carbone, a professor of medical oncology at Ohio State, oversees thoracic oncology and translational lung cancer research, with a focus on genetics, targeted therapies, immunotherapy and tumor-associated immunosuppression mechanisms.
