COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announces the following awards and more that were recently given to the organization, teams or individuals:    OSUCCC – James gains ACSCC 3-year reaccreditation  The OSUCCC – James has been reaccredited for three years by the American College of Surgeons – Commission on Cancer (ACSCC) following a survey that found no deficiencies. The accreditation extends until April 2026. Every three years, CoC-accredited cancer programs undergo a site visit in which a CoC reviewer assesses required program activity documentation to ensure compliance with the standards. Reaccreditation is a hallmark of excellence that documents commitment to holistic care by offering a full range of services to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support cancer patients and families.   Department of Urology accredited to launch fellowship program in urologic oncology The Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) has approved and accredited The Department of Urology at Ohio State to start a fellowship training program in urologic oncology. The program will annually award one two-year fellowship to help train the next generation of urologic oncology leaders, surgeon-scientists and clinical trialists. The Urologic Oncology Fellows will see patients at The James Outpatient Care in Ohio State’s new Carmenton innovation district. In approving the accreditation, the SUO review committee found several strengths in the fellowship program, including opportunity for multidisciplinary experience, strong research infrastructure, and departmental support from faculty and residents. The Department of Urology is chaired by Cheryl Lee, MD. Eric Singer, MD, is director of the Division of Urologic Oncology.   Yount is 2023 ICIS Mentorship Award recipient Jacob Yount, PhD, professor of microbial infection and immunity and member of the Cancer Biology Program at the OSUCCC – James, is the 2023 recipient of the International Cytokine & Interferon Society (ICIS) Mentorship Award. The award recognizes Yount for his contributions to interferon and viral immunity research “through not only his own seminal discoveries and scientific accomplishment, but also his ardent sponsorship and relentless championship of the junior faculty he has helped in the establishment and success of their own independent research programs, particularly during the COVID-19 restrictions that could have delayed their productivity.”     Makary inducted as Society of Vascular Medicine fellow  Mina Makary, MD, assistant professor of radiology, was inducted as a fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine in recognition of his clinical, research and leadership contributions to the field. Makary is a dual board-certified vascular and interventional radiologist who specializes in interventional oncology, complex hepatobiliary care, genitourinary interventions, venous disease and reconstruction, visceral arterial disorders, women's health, pain management, vascular and dialysis access, and diagnostic imaging. He also is an advocate for improving patient outcomes on the national stage.   Castle Connolly names 37 Ohio State clinical faculty Top AAPI Doctors Castle Connolly, a national research and information resource for patients, has named 37 clinical faculty members from The Ohio State University College of Medicine – including several associated with the university’s cancer program – to its inaugural list of Top Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Doctors. This marks the first time the organization has recognized outstanding AAPI doctors in the Castle Connolly network, part of its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging initiative.    Among those associated with the cancer program are: Seema Bhat, MD, hematology; Bhavana Konda, MD, Sameek Roychowdhury, MD, PhD, and Sagar Sardesai, MBBS, all of medical oncology; Elizabeth Yu, MD, orthopaedic surgery; Amit Agrawal, MD, and Stephen Kang, MD, both of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery; Leslie Kim, MD, otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery; Wei Chen, MD, PhD, and Anil Parwani, MD, PhD, both of pathology; Bhuvana Setty, MD, pediatric hematology/oncology; Albert Chao, MD, Sonu Jain, MD, and Clara Lee, MD, all of plastic and reconstructive surgery; Priya Dedhia, MD, PhD, Aslam Ejaz, MD, and Benjamin Poulose, MD, all of surgery.    Benson earns Master Teacher Award from Ohio State College of Medicine  Don Benson, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine (hematology) and member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program at the OSUCCC – James, is a recipient of the 2023 Mary Beth Fontana, MD Master Teacher Award, which annually recognizes two educators in the Ohio State College of Medicine who have been exemplary in the development of excellent, professional and humanistic physicians. Benson specializes in treating patients with multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, and those undergoing blood and marrow transplantation. Also receiving the 2023 Master Teaching Award was Kimberly Tartaglia, MD, professor of internal medicine (hospital medicine).    Denlinger lands 2023 ASH Scholar Award  Nathan Denlinger, DO, assistant professor of hematology, received a 2023 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Scholar Award for his project titled “Early, Risk Adapted CC-99282 + Rituximab Post CAR T-Cell Therapy for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.” ASH Scholar awards support early-career investigators in hematology as they transition from training programs to careers as independent researchers. Denlinger was awarded at the Clinical Fellow level, which provides $100,000 to support hematologists whose research advances the understanding and treatment of blood disorders.    Stiff receives 2023 ASCO Young Investigator Award Andrew Stiff, MD, PhD, a second-year fellow in hematology, received an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Young Investigator Award for his project titled “Integrated Genomic Analysis to Reveal the Genetic Landscape and Delineate Clinically Relevant, Ancestry-Associated Variants in Hispanic Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients.” Young Investigator Awards provide research funding of $50,000 to promising young physicians during their final years of training to support their transition to a faculty appointment and to encourage quality research in clinical oncology.  ### Media Contact: Amanda Harper OSUCCC - James Media Relations Amanda.Harper2@osumc.edu | 614-685-5420
