COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael D. Lairmore (43212), a nationally respected researcher, has been promoted to lead the shared resources at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. In the newly created position of associate director of shared resources, Lairmore will oversee a network of 16 specialized services, which serve as centralized cancer research core facilities for investigators across the university. The shared resources facilities provide state-of-the-art technologies and the expertise required to conduct high-level cancer research that can lead to innovative clinical therapies and diagnostic procedures. In 2011, Lairmore will lead the development of three new shared resources – medicinal chemistry, nutrient & phytochemical and solid tumor correlative science. Lairmore also serves as associate dean for research and graduate studies in Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is a national expert in molecular virology and veterinary pathology. He has a special interest in the biology of cancer-causing viruses such as HTLV-1, a retrovirus that can lead to adult T-cell leukemia and lymphoma. Lairmore was recently inducted into the national Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors awarded to scientists in the biomedical fields. He has contributed more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, and serves as an associate editor for Retrovirology and as an editorial board member for the journal Virology. Lairmore received a Distinguished Scholar Award from The Ohio State University, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and recipient of the American Cancer Society’s Hero of Hope Award. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Missouri and his doctorate at Colorado State University. He completed postdoctoral training at the Centers for Disease Control and worked there as a microbiologist before joining the faculty at Ohio State in 1990.
