COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) announces the following awards, honors, grants and more that were recently given to the organization, teams or individuals:   NIH grant will support new data science postdoctoral training program at Ohio State The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences at the NIH has awarded a five-year, $1.26 million grant that will help OSUCCC – James scientists launch a Clinical and Translational Data Science (CTDS) T32 Postdoctoral Training Program.  The program, to be led by Ohio State’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), will annually provide four learners with cross-training in both clinical and data science, enabling them to help reduce, remove or bypass problems in clinical and translational science (CTS) and accelerate delivery of new drugs, diagnostics and medical devices to patients. Principal investigators are Lang Li, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Ohio State and member of the Cancer Biology Program at the OSUCCC – James; Kellie Archer, PhD, director of the Division of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health at Ohio State; and Mitch Phelps, PhD, professor in the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State and co-director of the Pharmacoanalytical Shared Resource within the OSUCCC – James, where he and Dr. Archer are in the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program. Eisfeld chosen to provide expert input at international blood cancer classification meeting Ann-Kathrin Eisfeld, MD, director of the Clara D. Bloomfield Center for Leukemia Outcomes Research at the OSUCCC – James, has been selected to participate in the international Classification Advancement Meeting (CAM) for hematopoietic neoplasms on March 18-20 in Chicago.  Dr. Eisfeld, who also is in the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program at the OSUCCC – James, is one of eight physician scientists worldwide selected to work with hematopathologists at the CAM to combine and revise the classification of myeloid neoplasms. Her responsibilities at the meeting will involve acute myeloid leukemia (AML).  The CAM will involve expert hematologists, hematopathologists and geneticists from around the world who will discuss the classification of hematologic malignancies (blood cancers) and propose advancements to inform the sixth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Myeloid and Lymphoid Neoplasms. Their work will lead to a series of published journal articles. Hintenlang inducted as an IOMP Fellow Kathleen Hintenlang, PhD, professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ohio State, was one of eight distinguished scientists inducted as a 2025 Fellow of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP). This honor recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the international development of medical physics, a discipline that applies physics to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer. Dr. Hintenlang’s specialties include radiation oncology training and educational mentorship, clinical trials, accreditation, new technology and international affairs. Department of Radiology named ARCH-AI center The Department of Radiology in Ohio State’s College of Medicine was named a recognized center as part of the American College of Radiology® (ACR®) Recognized Center for Healthcare-AI (ARCH-AI), the first national artificial intelligence quality assurance program for radiology facilities. The department was recognized for best practices in the use of AI in imaging interpretation, as well as for a commitment to safety and excellence in patient care. Founded in 1923, the American College of Radiology® (ACR®) represents more than 40,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists. Singer named as board chair for Kidney Cancer Association  Eric A. Singer, MD, MA, MS, professor and director of the Division of Urologic Oncology at Ohio State, has been named chair of the Board of Directors for the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA), an international non-profit organization that promotes scientific advances, participates in legislative advocacy, and provides educational resources for patients and caregivers. Dr. Singer, who also is in the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James and holds the Dave Longaberger Endowed Chair in Urology in Ohio State’s College of Medicine, is a prominent urologic surgeon with expertise in managing genitourinary malignancies. He has a special interest in using robotic and minimally invasive surgery to treat kidney cancers. His research focuses on developing treatments for patients with genitourinary malignancies through clinical trials.  As board chair, Dr. Singer will work closely with KCA board members and advisory councils, as well as KCA President and CEO Gretchen Vaughn, to ensure that the organization is pursuing its mission to serve those impacted by kidney cancer and to lead change through advocacy, research and education.  Ranganathan to serve as ASH scientific committee vice chair  Parvathi Ranganathan, PhD, associate professor in the Division of Hematology at Ohio State and member of the Leukemia and Hematologic Malignancies Program at the OSUCCC – James, will serve as vice chair of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Scientific Committee on Transplantation Biology and Cellular Therapies in 2026, after which she’ll serve a one-year term as committee chair in 2027. At the OSUCCC – James, Dr. Ranganathan’s lab team focuses on investigating mechanisms that regulate dysfunctional immune responses post-allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant, with the goal of developing selective and novel strategies that abrogate graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) while maintaining T-cell responses that are needed to preserve the beneficial graft-versus-leukemia effect, preventing disease relapse.   Vater receives SABCS Basic Science Scholars Award Mark Vater, a fifth-year PhD student in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (Biomedical Informatics track) at Ohio State, was selected to receive a San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) Basic Science Scholars Award to support his attendance at the 2025 SABCS in December.  Vater works in the lab of Daniel Stover, MD, associate professor in the Division of Medical Oncology at Ohio State and member of the Translational Therapeutics Program at the OSUCCC – James. Vater’s work focuses on understanding breast tumor immunity and prognosis by investigating digital pathology images and transcriptome-sequenced data.
