385,000-square-foot building will include central Ohio’s first proton therapy facility
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital recently broke ground on a new west campus ambulatory building south of the intersection of Kenny and Carmack roads.
The West Campus Ambulatory Building will increase the OSUCCC — James clinical operations space by 26.4% with the addition of a 44-bed outpatient surgery center, including interventional radiology services, a diagnostic imaging center, a retail pharmacy, radiation oncology, infusion services, and hematology and genitourinary clinics.
The West Campus Ambulatory Building will also contain the region’s first proton therapy treatment facility, which will offer treatment for adult and pediatric cancer patients in a single location. The project is a collaboration of the OSUCCC – James, the Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Proton therapy is an advanced type of radiation treatment that uses protons (positively charged particles) instead of X-rays to kill cancer cells. A machine delivers a high-energy proton beam painlessly through the skin from outside the body.
Construction will begin soon on the 385,000-square-foot West Campus Ambulatory Building and is projected for a phased clinical opening in fiscal year 2023.
The OSUCCC – James currently provides inpatient and outpatient care at 13 locations around Columbus. This includes four new screening mammography service sites in Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard and Grove City, and a new Cancer Diagnostic Center that provides patients with expedited access to testing through same-day or next-day appointments.
“This new West Campus Ambulatory Building represents more than brick and mortar — it’s symbolic of our cancer program’s commitment to our central Ohio community to increase access to the latest evidence-based oncology treatment options like proton therapy, as well as clinical trials. to benefit patients who need this type of subspecialized care,” said Dr. William Farrar, chief executive officer of The James.
