COLUMBUS, Ohio – Central Ohio patients will soon have expanded access to comprehensive cancer care at a single outpatient location when Ohio State opens its newest diagnostic and treatment facility, The James Outpatient Care Carmenton, located at 2121 Kenny Road.
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) will celebrate the launch of this new 385,000-square-foot freestanding outpatient cancer center at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, June 9, at 1:30 p.m.
“Ohio State continues to lead the way in providing compassionate, specialized and world-class care,” says John J. Warner, MD, chief executive officer of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and executive vice president at Ohio State. “This new outpatient care location is devoted entirely to cancer care and gives us the opportunity – and the space – to give our patients even better outcomes and more hope, from diagnosis, through treatment, to survivorship, now in an outpatient setting.”
The James Outpatient Care is located near the intersection of Kenny and Kinnear roads in Ohio State’s Carmenton innovation district, a new community on the university’s west campus. This eight-floor building will be home to the hospital’s first free-standing cancer outpatient surgery center and the region’s only proton therapy center. The latter is operated in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and will open to patients this fall.
“It’s appropriate that our newest outpatient care building is located in the innovation district because it is truly a symbol of how cancer treatment has evolved and changed,” says David Cohn, MD, interim chief executive officer of The James and a gynecologic oncologist. "Care has evolved so that we can deliver the science-backed, comprehensive and compassionate care The James is known for in an outpatient setting. This allows patients to be treated at the right place in the right time, often without requiring admission to the main James Cancer Hospital.”
The James Outpatient Care has eight operating rooms with 12 extended-care beds for patients recovering from same-day surgery. This includes gynecologic, prostate, thyroid, breast and skin cancer procedures, as well as bronchoscopies to diagnose lung or other thoracic cancers, soft-tissue biopsy procedures, interventional radiology procedures, and some plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The facility will offer a wide range of services for patients with cancer, including:
-
One-stop cancer clinics that allow patients to receive care from numerous disciplines involved in the patient’s treatment in one location. Clinics include: blood cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma); genitourinary cancers (bladder, kidney, prostate, testicular); genetic counseling; and the Cancer and Aging Resiliency (CARE) Clinic, which focuses on the unique needs of older patients;
-
Clinical treatment unit allow on-site evaluation for inclusion in research clinical trials and treatment;
-
Survivorship clinic offering comprehensive supportive services – from mental health services and pain management to meditation and exercise classes through JamesCare for Life;
-
On-site diagnostic and treatment planning imaging, including positron emission tomography (PET), dual-energy spectral imaging (a form of computed tomography imaging) and other diagnostic radiology tests;
-
Expanded digital pathology – technology that allows pathologists and oncologists to see and evaluate patient tissue samples in real time.
