All NewsOSUCCC – James Earns Magnet Re-Designation
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute staff, faculty and leadership were recently notified that for the second time they have achieved Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Donna Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, chair of the Commission on Magnet®, made the announcement in a March 15 phone call that was streamed at The James and five other cancer program sites. Havens notified us that as a result of the Magnet® re-designation document submitted to the ANCC last August and the findings from a January site visit, the Magnet Committee unanimously voted to credential the OSUCCC – James as a Magnet® organization once again. The renewed Magnet® status will extend for four years.
The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. The OSUCCC – James is among only 30 healthcare organizations in Ohio to have Magnet® status, an honor the OSUCCC – James initially achieved in 2013. During her phone call, Havens also said the Magnet Committee awarded two exemplars for James nursing care:
- The ongoing evaluation of The James nursing professional practice model of Relationship-Based Care and how nurses integrate it into the culture of the OSUCCC – James. The committee pointed out that, in addition to the traditional three caring relationships of patient/family, self and colleagues, the OSUCCC – James has added a fourth: care of the community, which is repeatedly validated in several ways, exceeding Magnet® expectations.
- The OSUCCC – James nurses’ continuing success in disseminating to the world our substantial research and evidence-based knowledge through 141 presentations at national conferences in 2017 and 58 scholarly articles contributed to nursing publications, including 38 peer-reviewed publications, from September 2013 to January 2018.
OSUCCC – James leadership is extremely proud of the prestigious Magnet® status and the nationally recognized excellence of James nurses. Because the rigorous application and review process demands participation from leaders and staff, congratulations go to everyone who had a hand in this monumental achievement, a reflection of the important roles that all OSUCCC – James staff play in the pursuit of a cancer-free world.
