COLUMBUS, Ohio – October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and people in the Columbus community are encouraged to lace up their sneakers in honor of the more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States by walking for a cause at the annual Stefanie Spielman Step Up for Breast Cancer 5K Sunday, Oct. 2. This annual event benefits the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, which has raised more than $25 million since its inception in 1998 in support of cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). This community event, which includes 5K, 1-mile and virtual options, will start and finish at The Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, 1145 Olentangy River Road. Individual and team registration is requested in advance and can be made at cancer.osu.edu/stepup. Registration for the 5K prior to the day of the event is $40 for adults and $25 for children over age 3. Registration for the 1 mile walk prior to the day of the event is $20 for both adults and children. The registration fee goes up by $5 for walk-up, day-of registration. All in-person participants will receive a T-shirt and participation medal, while supplies last. The event, set to begin at 9 a.m., is held in honor of its namesake, Stefanie Spielman, who worked tirelessly to heighten awareness of breast cancer and raise money for breast cancer research before she lost her 11-year battle with the disease in 2009.
