Wayfinder Community Linkages Patient Navigator Project
The Wayfinder Community Linkages Patient Navigation Project provides navigation for women seeking breast and cervical cancer screenings; including connecting eligible women with the Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. The Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program pays for screening services for women who are uninsured or underinsured.
Health Fairs and Community Events
Members from the Center for Community Outreach and Engagement team provide information and materials to community groups through health fairs and other community events. Center for Community Outreach and Engagement members assist organizations (coalitions, churches and others) in organizing health fairs or other related events.
Men's Health Education Series
An educational program developed by the Center for Community Outreach and Engagement and implemented by trained community health educators. This program provides a series of targeted educational sessions on lung, prostate and colorectal cancers, nutrition and clinical trials.
Real Men Cook and Eat Vegetables
The Real Men Cook and Eat Vegetables program aims to helps men make healthier food choices, encourage the use of container gardens and in doing so reduce risk factors for colorectal and prostate cancers and improve overall wellness. The series consist of four core elements: (1) nutrition educational sessions conducted by a Community Health Educator and local dietician; (2) hands-on healthy cooking classes under the guidance of a local chef; (3) grocery store tours led by a local dietician; and (4) the creation of herb and vegetable container gardens.
Scope It Out – Inflatable Colon
Scope It Out is an inflatable walkthrough model of the colon, providing an interactive format to educate lay community members about colon cancer and to promote colon cancer (CRC) screening. At each event, participants are given guided tours facilitated by nurses and health educators. Tour stops include details on normal colon tissue, benign polyps, Crohn’s disease, colon cancer, advanced colon cancer, ulcerative colitis and ACS screening guidelines. At some of these events, pre- and post-surveys are completed to measure colon cancer knowledge, screening knowledge, testing intentions and willingness to discuss colon cancer, along with demographic information and colon cancer screening history. These events can also be an opportunity to conduct personalized wellness plans to address modifiable risk factors for colon cancer and to schedule CRC screenings.
Improve Your Health Program
Improve Your Health aims to educate the communities of Columbus by providing knowledge to help participants achieve better health. The program is dedicated to promoting prevention by educating participants about the relationship between health choices and risk for chronic illnesses especially cancer. Improve Your Health uses a variety of activities, events, group discussions and guest speakers. Guest speakers will include experts in medical fields related to the focus topic, as well as community members with relevant personal experiences. Through this education, communities will be empowered and leave with the tools they need to navigate the health care system and lead healthier lives.
Walk by Faith
The Walk by Faith (WbF) program is designed to encourage healthy eating and walking in collaboration with the faith-based community. The Walk by Faith toolkit contains materials to develop up to 12 monthly sessions to promote healthy eating and the benefits of physical activity to church members. The WBF programming format is flexible and can be customized to the needs of church members. The contents of this toolkit are organized around four main topics: healthy eating, fruits and vegetables, physical activity and walking and weight management. For each topic, the toolkit includes an educational presentation handouts and additional suggested activities.
Ribbons of Faith
The Ribbons of Faith (RoF) program is designed to provide education to help church members make informed decisions about cancer screening tests for breast, cervical, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer based on their age and risk factors. The Ribbons of Faith toolkit contains eight educational presentations and listing of additional activities to promote cancer screening and health information to church members. The RoF programming format is flexible and can be customized to the needs of the church members. The toolkit is packaged as a series of cancer screening and awareness educational presentations about the most common cancers that occur in men and women. For each topic, the toolkit includes an educational presentation handouts and additional suggested activities.
HPV Someone You Love Project
The “Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic” film screening is a documentary of five women’s lives affected by HPV that addresses myths and misconceptions of this widespread virus. The OSUCCC – James is one of four sponsors obtaining the $20,000 statewide license for unlimited public viewings of this film across the state of Ohio. The Center for Community Outreach and Engagement is working with The Crawford Crew and the Ohio Department of Health to develop an Implementation Toolkit to assist other organizations with utilizing this film to conduct HPV education programs.
