Mobile Health Units

The OSUCCC – James operates several mobile health units including the Mobile Mammography Unit, the Mobile Education Kitchen, the Mobile Lung Screening Unit and the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center Community Care Coach.

If you are interested in arranging for a mobile health unit to be present at your event, please begin by completing our community event request form. Requests for mobile health units must be submitted a minimum of ninety (90) business days prior to the date of the event.  


The James mobile mammography unit

The James Mobile Mammography Unit

The OSUCCC – James Mobile Mammography Unit performs routine (annual) mammograms for patients in the central Ohio area and some outlying counties. Each exam takes only fifteen minutes, from start to finish.

Truck information

  • The Mobile Mammography Unit is 41’-6” long x 9’-6” wide x 13’6” high.
  • The Mobile Mammography Unit cannot be parked on grass. Check to see if parking permits are required for city street/meter parking. Any required parking permits must be covered at the requestor’s expense.
  • Access to a nearby restroom is required.

The Mobile Mammography Unit does not have a mobility device lift, and a short set of stairs are used to enter the mobile units. Individuals who have mobility issues would be best served at our Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center or other OSUCCC-James Mammography locations.

Billing and insurance information

Truck Fee: There is no cost to host the Mobile Mammography Unit at your event. You are responsible for parking permits, where required.

Patient insurance/patient self-pay: Patients who hold medical insurance that allows the James Cancer Hospital as a provider will be accepted. Please have insurance information available for the appointment.

For individuals without insurance, the current self-pay cost for is $135 per exam for standard 2D imaging and $200 for 3D or Tomosynthesis imaging. If you need financial assistance, please call 614-293-6924.

Both types of exams include the imaging and radiologist interpretation.

Other requirements

The Mobile Mammography Unit can accommodate up to 21 individuals from 9:00 am - 4 pm. The minimum is 15 eligible patient appointments for a day of screenings. Individuals must be scheduled in advance for exams as we cannot accommodate walk-ins.

Individuals aged 35-39 can be seen with a prescription from their provider for a screening mammogram. Individuals 40 and older do not need a prescription, although every woman does need a doctor to send her report to.

Patient screening guidelines:

  • No breast issues currently
  • Never had breast cancer or it has been over 5 years breast cancer free
  • Asymptomatic pregnant women 30-39 with a doctor’s order (high risk indication should be on the order)
  • At least a year since last mammogram
  • Breast implants are permitted

The James Mobile Education Kitchen

The OSUCCC – James Mobile Education Kitchen delivers hands-on nutrition education in places where the public gathers with the focus on the complex relationship between nutrition and cancer. Teams including chefs and dietitians, as well as Ohio State students completing their dietetic internships, staff the kitchen, offering cooking demonstrations, food samples and nutrition information.

Truck information

  • The Mobile Education Kitchen is 30.5’.
  • The Mobile Education Kitchen cannot be parked on grass.
  • The Mobile Education Kitchen is a fully functioning kitchen with audio and visual capabilities, which means we can accommodate most menus for most events.
  • The Mobile Education Kitchen is in season from May 1 – October 31. The OSUMC Culinary Outreach team can still be requested outside of these dates, but the truck cannot be in attendance.

Billing information

  • Truck Fee (4+ hours): $250
  • Dietitian Fee: $25
  • Chef/Culinary Assistant Fee: $25
  • Supply Fees: depend on the menu and number of people estimated. This price can be discussed on the initial video call between the MEK team and requester.

Other requirements

  • Minimum of 30 program participants.
  • Location that is feasible for the truck to maneuver.
  • If the chefs are hosted onsite without the truck, there must be a table provided.

Mobile lung unitThe James Mobile Lung Screening Unit

Coming in Spring 2025

The OSUCCC – James Mobile Lung Screening Unit will offer low dose CT scans for the detection of lung cancer to individuals in the state of Ohio with a dedicated focus to serving communities in rural areas.

Truck information

  • The Mobile Lung Screening Unit is a large profile medical vehicle. Exact vehicle dimensions and parking requirements will be shared once the vehicle is available for scheduling.
  • The Mobile Lung Screening Unit cannot be parked on grass. Check to see if parking permits are required for city street/meter parking. Any required parking permits must be covered at the requestor’s expense.
  • The Mobile Lung Screening Unit is ADA accessible.

Billing and insurance information

Truck Fee: There is no cost to host the Mobile Lung Screening Unit at your event. You are responsible for parking permits, where required.

Patient insurance/patient self-pay: Patients who hold Medicare, Medicaid, and other types of medical insurance that allows the James Cancer Hospital as a provider will be accepted. Please have insurance information available for the appointment.

For individuals without insurance, patients may qualify for no cost CT if they meet certain financial criteria. Please inquire for more information.

Other requirements

The Mobile Lung Screening Unit can accommodate up to 16 individuals during a 4-hour screening event Monday-Saturday between 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. The minimum is 12 eligible patient appointments for a day of screenings. Individuals must be scheduled in advance for exams due to insurance requirements.

Patient screening guidelines: Eligible individuals must be 50-80 years of age, a current/former smoker within the past 15 years, or has a smoking history of 20 years of 1-pack a day smoking habit.
