Diagnosed at 21, Jared’s life was put on hold as he prepared to battle against osteosarcoma — a form of bone cancer. With a strong commitment in faith, Jared realizes the importance of believing in Ohio State’s medical care, combined with a positive attitude, is key to becoming healthy again.

As a college student, the biggest obstacles you expect to face are what major to choose and how to study for that pesky final exam. However, Jared Sylvester of Upper Arlington was faced with an even bigger challenge during his junior year at Miami University of Ohio: a battle with cancer.

During his training for an upcoming half marathon, Jared began suffering from pains in his leg. After eight months, the pain became so unbearable he could barely walk, he decided to seek medical advice. His cancer diagnosis was confirmed at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Center and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

After learning he was facing osteosarcoma, Jared was prepared for a year-long fight complete with chemotherapy sessions and surgeries. However, with the help of physicians at Ohio State, Jared learned  many valuable lessons that helped him become healthy again.

“I firmly believe I received the best care at Ohio State,” Jared says. “At twenty-one, you think you are invincible. Cancer matured me – it taught me how to be compassionate, empathetic, and relate to other people during their times of trouble.”

Jared believes in putting your faith in something to believe in as the best way to remain focused on beating cancer. He encourages everyone to build a community of support, whether that be in your treatment center or hometown, to allow others to help you in your time of need.

Jared is grateful for being cured at OSUCCC – James. He encourages everyone to donate to the medical center that saved his life.

“The James has the medical research and staff to put an end to cancer,” Jared notes.
