2019 Block Lectureship

The OSUCCC – James is proud to work with the Block family to recognize leadership in the field of cancer through the Herbert and Maxine Block Memorial Lectureship Award for Distinguished Achievement in Cancer.

The lectureship supports an international competitive process that annually identifies an individual whose contributions to cancer research, patient care and/or education have received international recognition. In 2018, the monetary award was increased to $50,000, making the Block Memorial Lectureship Award one of the largest prizes given by an academic institution in the field of cancer. Additionally, a $25,000 prize will be awarded to an Ohio State researcher specializing in cancer research.

Herbert J. Block, a committed family man and dedicated businessman, died of colon cancer in May 1981. The following summer, his family organized an annual golf tournament in his memory. Since its inception, the Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament has provided more than $6 million for cancer research and education at Ohio State, including the establishment and support of this annual lectureship. Tournament proceeds have also supported construction of the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute that opened in 2014 – the largest construction project in the university’s history. This new facility unites groundbreaking research, clinical excellence and evidence-based education into a singular focus to cure cancer.

The Block family is an exemplary model of a family working together to channel their energies toward eradicating this disease. Their determination and commitment to raise research dollars became all the more poignant when the Block children lost their mother, Maxine, to lung cancer in 1998. Their unwavering commitment to the fight against cancer honors the memory of Herbert and Maxine Block through this lectureship.
