Translational Therapeutics

Allan Tsung, MD, is the director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the OSUCCC – James as well as a member of the Translational Therapeutics Program, where his research focuses on examining the role of innate immunity in injury-induced inflammation and the tumor microenvironment of primary and metastatic liver malignancies, with particular expertise in neutrophil and macrophage biology, damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) danger responses, autophagy and mitochondrial function using clinically relevant models of injury and cancer.

The strong translational perspective of Dr. Tsung’s investigations, which capitalize upon analyses of human cohort data and clinical correlates of animal-based studies, provides mechanistic insight into the clinically relevant outcomes of organ dysfunction and cancer progression via tumor cell survival, expansion and metastases.

Dr. Tsung brings a prolific research laboratory to Ohio State with two principal investigator R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), multiple co-investigator R01s and a number of society and institutional grants. His current projects focus on novel mechanisms, strategies and therapeutics to improve the morbidity and mortality outcomes of patients with hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers, as well as health services research focusing on improving the access, delivery and quality of surgical oncology care. His long-term goal is to continue bringing bench-side research breakthroughs to bedside clinical therapies.

Dr. Tsung has co-authored over 180 articles in peer-reviewed publications in leading scientific journals such as the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology and the Journal of Immunology. He is the current president of the Society of University Surgeons and participates in leadership roles in several other important organizations, such as the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons, the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
