Dr. Yilmaz’ lab is developing a navigation system for assisting surgeons to visualize perioperative images and define better tumor margins in real time during the surgery. The system uses preoperative images to locate 3D cancer margins. During the surgery, a navigation system composed of multiple stationary cameras and a google glass identifies the position and orientation of the tools the surgeon is using and superimpose the tumor margin and the trajectory information on the display unit on the google glass. There are also software units that analyze dynamic 3D changes in the surgical scene and the patient body to relocate and reregister the tumor region as the organs move. They are also developing a prototype to use the same system for pathology guidance.
