Don Benson Jr., MD PhD, FACP, is a member of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program at the OSUCCC – James, where he and his multidisciplinary, subspecialized team care for patients with multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, as well as those undergoing blood and marrow stem cell transplantation.

Following his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia, Dr. Benson came to The Ohio State University to complete his subspecialty training in clinical oncology and his postdoctoral laboratory training. He joined the faculty at Ohio State in 2006 and holds the rank of associate professor of medicine. He is ABIM board certified in medical oncology and holds a Fellowship in the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Benson also serves as head of translational research for the Division of Hematology. In this capacity, he helps facilitate the connection of new laboratory discoveries to clinical trials for patients with cancer. His research interests are focused in the development of immune-based therapy for multiple myeloma and other cancers.

Work by his laboratory team has helped bring new immune-based and targeted therapies to clinical use. In addition to laboratory-based research, Dr. Benson has led over 100 therapeutic clinical trials as principal or co-principal investigator in which he has tested promising novel treatments for cancer. His team has published over 90 peer-reviewed research manuscripts in the most eminent journals of the field, and they have presented their research findings in over 100 abstracts and presentations at scientific meetings around the world.

Dr. Benson is also involved in Ohio State’s medical education mission and has received both the Professor of the Year award (2012) and the Distinguished Educator Award (2016) from The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
